Great Ocean Road Koala Sanctuary
How to find Koalas along the Great Ocean Road
The Great Ocean Road is an incredible Australian road journey with some of the most breathtaking Australian sights you will see.
Why visit the Great Ocean Road
This is one road trip that’s packed with numerous attractions and sights.
Marvel at the 12 Apostles rock formations, old lighthouses that tell stories of wrecks along the coast, hang out in the surf town of Torquay, or hike through rainforest in the Grampians or Great Otway National Park.
There are lots of opportunities for wildlife spotting year round – including kookaburras, kangaroos, echidnas, crimson rosellas, emus, and migrating Southern Right whales.
One of Australia’s icons – the koala – which is a big draw card for tourists to Australia, can be found in select spots along the road.
Koalas along the Great Ocean Road
The Great Ocean Road Tours is prime koala spotting territory.
Kennett River, between Apollo Bay and Lorne, is a good place to see koalas and Grey River Road, which leads through the Great Otway National Park, is lined with gum trees dotted with koalas in their natural habitat.
Koalas are notoriously shy and often snooze among the forks of eucalyptus trees with good camouflage against the bark so you may need a pair of binoculars to spot them.
Of course, you can spot koalas at Healesville Sanctuary or the Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary if you are near Melbourne, and Kangaroo Island if you are travelling around South Australia.
