Things to do in Katherine from Darwin
Katherine Region known as the “Adventure Territory” is one of the 5 regions of the Northern Territory, about 320 kilometres south of Darwin. Also called as “Crossroads of the Outback” due its location, which is between the Darwin Region, Kakadu National Park, the Barkley Region and the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. It covers an area of approximately 337,674 square kilometres, where one can experience all what outback has to offer.
John McDouall, an explorer named the region after the daughter of a pastoralist in the 1800s. It was home to the Jawoyn Aboriginal people, being the traditional owners, renaming the place “Nitmiluk” which means Cicada place, in 1989, as they gained native title to the land.
The main attraction here is the famous Nitmiluk or Katherine Gorge. Katherine has hidden natural wonders and a rich indigenous and pioneering history, also includes fishing.
A great thing to do in Katherine Gorge is to hire a kayak for a day or take a canoe tour. It is a great thing to do for adventure tours from Darwin.
